Concrete in Daily Life of an Elephant
This poignant image captures a crucial moment of survival in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka, where a young Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) uses its trunk to drink from a small, square, man-made concrete trough, a vital lifeline in the park’s parched, semi-arid environment. This deliberate human intervention is characteristic of the harsh dry season, typically spanning from June to October, when the region’s natural streams and water bodies evaporate entirely, threatening the survival of wildlife. To ensure the sustenance of keystone species like the elephant and to proactively mitigate the increasing risk of Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC), which is often triggered by desperate animals venturing into villages for water, park management and conservation groups actively engage in compassionate conservation by maintaining and deepening water holes, building man-made tanks, and dispatching water bowsers to replenish these artificial pools. This continuous, reliable effort establishes a sensitive connection between humans and nature, transforming the relationship from mere preservation to one of shared responsibility, as the elephants have even adapted their seasonal behavior to rely on and congregate around this dependable, life-saving human provision of water.
