Winter is coming!

To the northern hemisphere and with it, hundreds of thousands of migrants flock to the tropical belt for warmth and food before returning to their breeding grounds in spring.

The first of the migrants often start arriving in Sri Lanka by late October with the main host coming through November and December.
This glossy ibis is one such winter visitor, photographed at Wilpattu National Park. Next time you’re out in the wilderness with Wild Ceylon Expeditions, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any unfamiliar birds - the migrant season is always one of pleasant surprises!

Although an elephant's tusks are quite strong, they can snap during fights with other elephants or if the tusker gets a bit too enthusiastic in stripping bark off trees.

Ruhunu, the young tusker at Yala, has managed to break off his left tusk completely between these two pictures, in addition to a fractured right. But tusks continue to grow as an elephant ages and we hope Ruhunu's will eventually grow back and he learns to be a bit more careful!
