In 1886, Carl Benz was issued a patent for his "Vehicle with Gasoline Engine". It was the world's first functioning automobile with a conventional gasoline engine.

The small single-cylinder four-stroke engine was lightweight and yet powerful enough to drive the vehicle. The automobile itself was powered by the engine via a belt to a central driveshaft and from there via gear and chain to the rear wheels. It was steered by a tiller. The "Benz Tricycle" or three-wheeled carriage was based on parts commonly used in bicycle construction. The frame and tires were provided by the Adler bicycle works.

The "Patent Motorwagen" provided a new type of auto-mobility In the long-term, the gasoline-powered automobile replaced competing steam-powered and electric vehicles. Benz's invention, however, initially met with a reserved response. The Patent Motorwagen disappeared back into the workshop and, according to shop manager August Horch, was not reassembled with its original parts until the end of the 1890s.
