🧐 Why Panel Boards Have a Standard Installation Height??

1. Safety
• The main reason is human safety.
• Installing a panel too high or too low increases the risk of electric shock or accidental contact while operating switches or breakers.
• A standard height ensures the operator’s eyes, hands, and body are at a safe and comfortable position when accessing the panel.

2. Ease of Operation & Maintenance
• The main switch or topmost breaker must be reachable without using ladders or stools.
• The standard height (usually 1.5–1.8 meters from floor to center/top of the panel) allows comfortable operation for most adults.
• Technicians can safely read meters, reset breakers, or perform maintenance tasks.

3. Compliance with Standards
Different standards specify mounting heights to maintain uniformity and accessibility:
• NEC (National Electrical Code):
The operating handle of the highest breaker should not exceed 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in) above the floor.
• IEC / IS Standards:
Typically recommend panel mounting so the center or operating handle is between 1.4 m and 1.8 m from the floor.
• This ensures consistency across installations — residential, commercial, or industrial.

4. Ergonomics
• Operators should not need to bend or stretch excessively to access breakers or meters.
• The height is based on average human reach for comfort and safety.

5. Aesthetics & Coordination
• Standard height also helps keep all electrical devices (switchboards, sockets, panels) at a uniform level, improving the visual alignment and making wiring and labeling neater.
