Sri Lanka celebrates independence day every year on February 4th to commemorate the nation’s political independence from British rule in 1948.

Sri Lanka has been under the rule of the Portuguese in 1505-1658, Dutch in 1658-1796, and by the British in 1796-1948. Sri Lanka was granted independence as the Dominion of Ceylon. Dominion status within the British Commonwealth was retained for the next 24 years until 22 May 1972 when it became a republic and was renamed the 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙧𝙞 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙖.
