Buchanan: The President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Julius Kanubah, has reaffirmed the union’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of journalists across Liberia, with emphasis on ethical, investigative, development, environmental, and online reporting.
Mr. Kanubah said the PUL leadership will prioritize capacity-building initiatives to ensure journalists engage in fact-based journalism beyond simply breaking news.
“We reaffirm our commitment to strengthen the capacity of journalists in areas such as ethical reporting, investigative reporting, development reporting, environmental and climate change reporting, but crucially online reporting,” he stated.
According to the PUL President, improving the skills and welfare of journalists remains a major priority for the union as it works to strengthen community media for development, accountability, and national progress.

Liberia’s National Rubber Brokers and Farmers Union has rejected President Joseph Boakai’s Executive Order banning the export of unprocessed natural rubber, warning that the policy could have severe economic consequences for thousands of livelihoods.
The directive, which took effect on July 1, is intended to encourage local processing, increase value addition, create jobs, and strengthen Liberia’s rubber industry by reducing the export of raw materials.
However, the union argues that the policy has been introduced prematurely, insisting that the country lacks sufficient processing facilities to absorb current production.
According to the union, enforcing the ban without the necessary industrial capacity could leave farmers and brokers with unsold rubber, reduce household incomes, and disrupt one of Liberia’s most important agricultural value chains.
The development has reignited debate over how best to balance industrialisation with the protection of livelihoods as Liberia seeks to maximize the benefits of its natural resources.

GUINEA: Newly Elected Local Councils Take Office as Special Delegations Dissolved
The Guinean government has officially ended the mandate of the special delegations that have administered municipalities across the country since 2022, marking a significant step in the restoration of local governance.
The decision follows the installation of newly elected communal executive councils, which are expected to take over the management of local authorities after years of transitional administration.
However, the government has warned that the special delegations could be reinstated if the newly elected local officials are found to have mismanaged public affairs or failed to effectively administer their councils.
The move comes as Guinea continues its political transition, with authorities seeking to strengthen local governance while maintaining oversight and accountability at the municipal level.
