They call me selfish now, but they forget who I used to be.

I was the one who always put others first—the one who gave until I had nothing left. I helped even when I needed help myself. I said "yes" when I should’ve said "no." I let people take advantage of me because I thought kindness meant never standing up for myself.

But now that I finally set boundaries, now that I protect my peace, now that I refuse to be used—suddenly, I’m "mean." Suddenly, I’m "selfish." They don’t remember the years I spent pouring into others while running on empty. They don’t acknowledge the times I showed up for them when no one showed up for me. They only see the change, not the years of hurt that caused it.

I’m not cruel. My heart is still soft. I still care—I just care about myself too. And that doesn’t make me selfish. It just means I’ve learned to choose me. Finally.
