Laughter: A Healing Balm

In late July, my husband and I traveled to Nigeria to celebrate my fabulous friend’s birthday. While there, we were assigned a lovely driver called Donnie. On the last day of our time in Lagos, Donnie had to take us to the airport. If you have been to Lagos, Nigeria, traffic is a considerable challenge. Though we were on time, Donnie wanted to ensure we arrived earlier than required for a smooth check-in.

While driving—the traffic was heavy—Donnie tried to cut off a female driver. Every time he attempted to get in front of her, she accelerated and gave him an angry look. I was concerned that it would get ugly, but Donnie kept laughing after each failed attempt, and the woman seemed to be getting more irate. After a few minutes of this back and forth, Donnie drove close to her and rolled down his glass. She immediately brought hers down, ready to charge at him. Still laughing, he said, “Good morning, madam.” She glared at him, but he just kept laughing. Eventually, she burst into laughter and proceeded to give Donnie the way—the tension was squashed.

I kept thinking about the moment and how a burst of infectious laughter could deescalate a tense situation. We live in a time when many people are constantly angry due to acute hardships in all facets of life. If only we could breathe and smile in moments of tension before responding, imagine how many pains we would avert and how many injuries we could stop.

Laughter is indeed a healing balm! Laugh a lot this week. Life is not that serious. Whatever you are facing will pass.
