EPA Takes Charge of ARREST Agenda’s Environmental Pillar

Monrovia, Liberia, July 3, 2026 – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia has officially begun coordinating the government’s environmental sustainability efforts under Pillar Five of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

The move follows a first high-level coordination meeting held Friday, July 3, at the EPA headquarters in Monrovia, bringing together line ministries, agencies, and commissions to align implementation and improve cooperation.

Speaking at the meeting, EPA Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo said the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has designated the EPA as the lead institution for coordinating, monitoring, and reporting all activities under the environmental pillar.

He said the responsibility is a major national assignment, stressing that environmental sustainability is directly linked to key sectors including agriculture, health, roads, mining, energy, and sanitation.

Dr. Yarkpawolo urged stronger collaboration among government institutions, noting that the EPA will ensure regular reporting, data sharing, and accountability in the implementation process.

He added that quarterly coordination meetings will be held to track progress and address challenges.

Representatives of ministries and agencies pledged their commitment to work with the EPA to advance climate resilience, environmental protection, and sustainable development goals.

Day Two Update: EPA & Partners Build Capacity for Climate-Smart MSMEs

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia, in collaboration with the Youth Entrepreneurs Network of Liberia (YEN-L) and with support from the UNIDO GROW-2 Project, continued its four-day workshop aligning MSMEs with Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Day Two focused on helping MSMEs move from climate awareness to real action through:
• Climate-smart production & enterprise resilience
• Energy efficiency and renewable energy options
• Sustainable resource management and operational planning

Participants also held a business exhibition and growth dialogue, where entrepreneurs showcased innovative products and services supporting sustainable livelihoods, food security, and climate resilience, including locally produced agro-products, improved agro-processing solutions, healthy food technologies, and other climate-relevant innovations.

During discussions, MSMEs shared key challenges affecting growth and competitiveness, such as high import costs for packaging, limited access to modern equipment, insufficient capacity-building, and difficulty accessing affordable financing.

The session was coordinated by Madam Danise Love Dennis-Dodoo and highlighted the need for practical climate action, stronger public-private collaboration, and measurable results to attract investment and develop bankable projects.
