New York, September 26, 2024 – In a powerful address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai called for international cooperation to combat poverty, promote justice, and garner support for Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2026.

Delivering his inaugural speech at the UNGA on Wednesday, President Boakai underscored the persistent challenges of poverty that continue to afflict more than half of Liberia’s population, particularly its youth, despite nearly two decades of peace. “Despite our progress, poverty remains a significant challenge, with over half of our population living below the poverty line,” he stated, reiterating Liberia’s dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at eradicating poverty by 2030.

In a poignant acknowledgment of Liberia’s tumultuous history, President Boakai highlighted the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court as a crucial step toward justice for victims of the country’s 14-year civil conflict. This initiative aligns with the recommendations from Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and in May, President Boakai signed Executive Order 131 to formally create the Office dedicated to this transitional justice process. “Our actions align with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and we seek the support of the United Nations, partners, and stakeholders in the pursuit of justice, peace, and reconciliation,” he affirmed.
