House Orders Investigation into AFCONS Unrest After Yekepa Clashes
The House of Representatives has mandated its Joint Committee on Labour, National Security and Judiciary to investigate the AFCONS labour dispute in Nimba County after violent protests in Yekepa led to 27 arrests.
The House’s decision followed concerns raised by Nimba County lawmakers Nyan Flomo and Nehker Gaye over alleged unfair labour practices and the need to restore calm in the mining town
The protest was reportedly triggered by allegations of unpaid salaries and benefits by workers of AFCONS, a subcontractor of ArcelorMittal Liberia.
Plenary has asked the Ministry of Labour to submit a report on the allegations, the company’s compliance with labour laws, and steps to prevent further unrest.
