The mountains of Lesotho are a tricky drive in winter or when cold. Most places are reachable despite the cold, snow and general freezing weather. We advise travellers to time their travel well. Even without snow, the roads are very slippery owing the black ice formed due to any sort of moisture that may find its way in the road. Black ice develops on the surface of a roadway. It is a transparent layer, but takes on the color of the surface of road. When it gets wet from outside temperatures warming up, it becomes dangerously slick. Tyres cannot provide the proper traction needed to grip the road, and that is when accidents happen. The ideal situation is to avoid all the steep passes and roads when it too early. We advise that travelers do so between 9am and 4pm. That is, do not find yourself in those roads before 9am or after 4pm or anytime depending on when the sun passes over that area.
