Auksteit National Park (Aukštaitijos nacionalinis parkas)
is located in the north-east of Lithuania, just 110 km from the capital – the city of Vilnius. It is the oldest object of its kind in the country and the most picturesque, for which the locals call it "Lithuanian Switzerland".
Aukstein National Park extends over 405 thousand square kilometers (this is 1% of the total area of the country), of which 2% belongs to a specially protected area. 50% of the reserve's territory is administratively located in Ignalinsky district, 25% – in Shvenchensky and the same amount – in Utensky.
The biological diversity of the park is really amazing – 59% (64 species of plants and 8 species of fungi) are found in it from all representatives of the flora that are registered on the territory of Lithuania. There are 48 species of birds listed in the Red Book.
