We often hear the question: if I am allergic to dogs, can I raise a dog of the hypoallergenic breed? The answer may seem sad at first but read carefully, as even people with allergies can successfully raise pets. Hypoallergenic dog breeds are a myth.

Dog allergies are caused not by the hair of the dog but by the proteins (molecules) in its fur, saliva and skin. And unfortunately, dogs of all breeds have these molecules. However, some people are allergic to a single, highly-specific canine molecule produced and released into the environment only by male dogs. This molecule is called Can f 5 and is produced in the prostate of male dogs and excreted in the male dog urine.

Individuals sensitive to this molecule alone can successfully raise a female dog or a castrated male without experiencing any symptoms. In the ALEX allergy test, your blood is tested for sensitization to 6 dog molecules, including the dog's male urine (Can f 5)!

So the test results will tell you: that maybe you can safely raise a female dog. Or perhaps you can safely take a new family member home by undergoing treatment with allergen-specific immunotherapy.
