The case and need for professional development for teachers

Some schools are fortunate enough to have the funding to hire from high priced agencies that can get them very high quality teachers. Schools who can do this pay thousands of dollars per teacher. Needless to say most schools do not have this. Moreover, even this advantage does not guarantee a great teacher who is a good fit at that school. Sometimes they look great on paper and interviews but fall short in terms of chemistry and the context of that school. I have been the director at such schools and can assure you that while it helps to have all that, you just don’t know how it will go until the teacher gets to your school.

However, there is another side to this story: ALL teachers, regardless of their quality and experience need to learn continuously or face obsolescence. When I started teaching, the internet didn't even exist! Fast forward 30 years and I was in USA two years ago at some very expensive training for educators and I learned new research that forced me to re-examine my practice. The point is that whether you are new or experienced, effective or ineffective, all teachers can get better and the ONLY way for this to happen is through professional study.

The good news about this is it that it is available to any school that is committed to the process of providing this opportunity at a reasonable price, even for low budget schools. The bad news is most schools simply do not dedicate the energy to this pursuit even though they should and many of them know they need to do so. Most schools seem to have priorities other than having excellent teaching staffs and the lack of providing professional training is a clear indicator of this.

One key way you as parents can tell if teachers at your school are being sufficiently trained is if kids go home at the end of the day unable to explain what they learned in school that day. Even schools who think that is not the case in their school are often mistaken. It is much more common than people want to admit and it is an unacceptable condition.

The training I am providing to some schools assures this does not happen or happens much less often. In my next piece I will offer evidence of schools in Myanmar who are doing this and getting results. And I will explain how and why it happens and what can be done about it for schools who are not doing this and what you can do as parents and teachers to make sure this does happen.

ဆရာမများအတွက် အသက်မွေးဝမ်းကျောင်း ဖွံ့ဖြိုးတိုးတက်ရေးအတွက် လိုအပ်သည့် ကိစ္စရပ်၊

အချို့ကျောင်းများသည် အရည်အသွေးမြင့် ဆရာ ဆရာမများကို ပေးဆောင်နိုင်သည့် စျေးနှုန်းကြီးမြင့်သော အေဂျင်စီများထံမှ ငှားရမ်းရန် ရန်ပုံငွေရရှိရန် ကံကောင်းပါသည်။ ဒီလိုလုပ်နိုင်တဲ့ကျောင်းတွေက ဆရာတစ်ယောက်အတွက် ဒေါ်လာထောင်ချီပေးရပါတယ်။ ကျောင်းအများစုမှာ ဒီလိုမရှိဘူးလို့ ပြောစရာမလိုပါဘူး။ ဒါ့အပြင် ဒီအားသာချက်တောင်မှ အဲဒီကျောင်းမှာ အံဝင်ခွင်ကျရှိတဲ့ ဆရာကောင်းတစ်ယောက်လို့ အာမခံချက်မပေးပါဘူး။ တခါတရံ စာရွက်နဲ့ အင်တာဗျူးတွေမှာ ကောင်းကောင်းကြည့်တတ်ပေမယ့် ဓာတုဗေဒနဲ့ အဲဒီကျောင်းရဲ့ ဆက်စပ်မှုကတော့ တိုတောင်းပါတယ်။ ဒီလိုကျောင်းတွေမှာ ဒါရိုက်တာလုပ်ဖူးပြီး အဲဒါတွေအကုန်ရနိုင်ပေမယ့် ဆရာ့ကျောင်းမရောက်မချင်း ဘယ်လိုသွားမယ်ဆိုတာကို အာမခံနိုင်ပါတယ်။

မိဘများအနေဖြင့် သင့်ကျောင်းမှ ဆရာများ လုံလောက်စွာ လေ့ကျင့်သင်ကြားခြင်း ရှိ၊ မရှိ သိနိုင်သော အဓိကနည်းလမ်းမှာ ကလေးများသည် တစ်နေ့တာကုန်ဆုံးချိန်တွင် အိမ်ပြန်သွားပါက ထိုနေ့ကျောင်းတွင် သူတို့သင်ယူခဲ့ရာများကို မရှင်းပြနိုင်ပါ။ မိမိတို့ကျောင်းတွင် ထိုသို့မဟုတ်ဟုထင်သော ကျောင်းများပင်လျှင် မှားလေ့ရှိသည်။ ဒါဟာ လူတွေက ဝန်ခံချင်တာထက် ပိုအဖြစ်များပြီး ဒါဟာ လက်မခံနိုင်တဲ့ အခြေအနေတစ်ခုပါ။

ALSO RANS and The TITANIC

Happy 2024, everyone!

As you may know, I have been the SAYAR GYI of 3 International schools in Myanmar and am keeping score for the families in the community so you can know here to send your children as well as what schools to avoid. It’s time to give out some yearly awards to celebrate the good, the bad and the ugly of international schools in Myanmar. With way too many schools in the market now, we all have to stick together and inform each other.

In the UK and USA, horse racing is a very popular sport. There is room for 3 horses to be recognised after a race; WIN, PLACE and SHOW, for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. All the other horses are called “ALSO RAN”. Well, in Myanmar, amongst all of these UK curriculum schools we have so many ALSO RAN. It is making the marketplace oversaturated in a way that does not necessarily mean that competition is good.

In fact, it is a mathematical fantasy that these schools are proving qualified teaching in a rigorous Cambridge curriculum. These schools desperately want you to believe they are doing this, but there are simply not enough teachers and all the schools are basically competing for the same talent pool. You might think that the competition would make the price for the teachers go up, but just the opposite is happening. If you adjust teacher salary for inflation, this is the lowest teacher pay I have seen in Myanmar in the 10 years I have lived here. So not only are many schools struggling to meet customer demand, they are trying to defy market forces in doing it.

So a lot of ALSO RANS are TITANIC schools. The ship is sinking, the passengers are jumping into lifeboats and into the water trying to swim to safety. Meanwhile, the band continues to play and they re-arrange the furniture for the sake of the gusts still onboard. But the ship is sinking and many schools that start out as ALSO RAN end up as TITANIC.

In my research when I returned to Myanmar last summer, I saw so many new schools that have come up since around the time of the pandemic, meaning they are in their first 3-4 years of operation. I cam’t keep track of all the alphabet schools ABC, XYZ, IIP, RBIS,YAIS. Then there are schools with cute little gimmick names “One World” and “Ivy”, perhaps putting style over substance. Or schools like SIS Myanmar, Concept X, and Total and which must be setting some sort of record for staff and student turnover.

So what should you do, especially if you are enrolling at a new UK style school?

Ask these questions.

1. There are many schools trying to do more or less the same thing. What sets your school apart from the other schools? Watch them struggle to answer a question ANY business should be able to answer.
2. How do you recruit your teachers to make sure they are the highest quality? What talent. search agencies do you use? There are only a few serious recruitment agencies out there. The others are useless or are businesses trying to get teachers to join on and pay their fees.
3. What were the ____________scores for __________grade/year in the last exams? If they can’t or won’t answer that you know you have a problem. A good school knows this, shares this and has a plan to make things better, no matter how they are scoring.

If you get poor answers—and you will—move on. You have a lot of choices. In the end, it is up to us, the community of consumers ( I have 2 young nieces) to police this situation. We need to inform each other.

ယူကေနှင့် အမေရိကတွင် မြင်းပြိုင်ခြင်းသည် အလွန်ရေပန်းစားသော အားကစားတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။ ပြိုင်ပွဲအပြီးတွင် အသိအမှတ်ပြုရန် မြင်း ၃ ကောင်အတွက် နေရာရှိသည်။ 1st၊ 2nd နှင့် 3rd နေရာအတွက် Win, PLACE and SHOW. အခြားမြင်းအားလုံးကို “ALSO RAN” ဟုခေါ်သည်။ ကောင်းပြီ၊ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတွင် ဤ UK သင်ရိုးညွှန်းတမ်းကျောင်းများအားလုံးတွင် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် ALSO RAN များစွာရှိသည်။ ပြိုင်ဆိုင်မှုကောင်းသည်ဟု မဆိုလိုသည့်နည်းဖြင့် စျေးကွက်ကို ပြည့်နှက်နေစေသည်။

အရည်အသွေးအမြင့်မားဆုံးဖြစ်ကြောင်း သေချာစေရန် သင်၏ဆရာများကို သင်မည်သို့ခေါ်ယူမည်နည်း။ ဘာအရည်အချင်းလဲ။ ရှာဖွေရေးအေဂျင်စီများကို သင်အသုံးပြုပါသလား။ အဲဒီမှာ လေးနက်တဲ့ လူသစ်စုဆောင်းရေးအေဂျင်စီ အနည်းငယ်ပဲရှိတယ်။ အခြားသူများမှာ အသုံးမဝင်ပါ သို့မဟုတ် ဆရာများပါ၀င်ရန် အခကြေးငွေပေးဆောင်ရန် ကြိုးစားနေသည့် စီးပွားရေးလုပ်ငန်းများ။
နောက်ဆုံး စာမေးပွဲများတွင် ____________ ရမှတ်များ __________ အတန်း/နှစ်အတွက် ____________ ရမှတ်များ မည်သည်များလဲ။ မဖြေနိုင်ရင် မဖြေနိုင်ရင် မင်းမှာ ပြဿနာရှိနေတယ်။ ကျောင်းကောင်းတစ်ကျောင်းက ဒါကိုသိတယ်၊ ဒါကိုမျှဝေပြီး သူတို့ဘယ်လောက်ပဲ အမှတ်ပေးပါစေ၊ ပိုကောင်းအောင်လုပ်ဖို့ အစီအစဉ်ရှိတယ်။

ညံ့ဖျင်းတဲ့အဖြေတွေရရင် ဆက်လျှောက်ပါ။ မင်းမှာ ရွေးချယ်စရာတွေ အများကြီးရှိတယ်။ နောက်ဆုံးတော့ စားသုံးသူအသိုင်းအဝိုင်း (ကျွန်တော့်မှာ တူမငယ် ၂ ယောက်ရှိတယ်) ဒီအခြေအနေကို ရဲတွေအပေါ် မူတည်တယ်။ အချင်းချင်း အသိပေးဖို့ လိုတယ်။
