What is kWh, kVAh, kVARh?

(1) KWh : kilo watt hours is a unit of energy. In AC as well as DC Circuit it represents actual work done. This is also called as active power.1000watts per hour = 1kWh. Formula for KW is voltage× current× cosπ (cosπ is the angle between voltage and current waveform which also denotes power factor.neglect cosπ in case of dc current) thus formula for KWh = [Power (in watts) × time ( in hours)]/ 1000.

(2) KVARh : kilo volt ampere reactive hour is unit of reactive energy which basically does not do any real/active work but is present in system. Reactive power is needed by inductive load such as transformer/inductor/ motor etc for magnetization. Formula for KVAR is voltage × current×sinπ( sineπ is the angle between voltage waveform and current waveform). This power is not applicable to DC current since angle of current and voltage waveform are same.

(KVAh): kilo volt ampere hours is unit in AC circuit which represents vector summation of active and reactive powers. KVA is also called as apperent power.Formula for kVA is just Voltage×current.
