Covid 19 pandemic effects on the international Trade & Logistics

1. Global trade has collapsed.

The interconnectedness of the global economy is amplifying the impact of the pandemic, which has spread quickly through travel and transport routes. The pandemic has directly affected international trade and global supply chains (GSCs) that link production in multiple locations across the world.

A lot of productive activities have been disrupted, first in Asia and then in Europe, North America and the rest of the world, and there have been widespread closures between borders. This has resulted in a huge rise in unemployment, especially in the United States, with a consequent reduction in demand for both services and goods. Against this backdrop, global GDP in 2020 is expected to register its sharpest contraction since the Second World War.

2.The collapse in tourism and short-term positive demand in Food retail

In the case of services, some sectors, such as civil aviation and tourism, have been particularly hard hit with a strong negative demand shock in the initial months of the global crisis. Other sectors, such as food retail, have experienced a sharp rise in demand in the short-term with a strong positive demand shock

3. Exports and imports of goods set to decline by a quarter in 2020.

The volume of global trade in goods fell by 17.7% in May 2020. Although it particularly affected exports from the United States, Japan, and the European Union. The economic contraction in China was smaller than the global average, as that country controlled the outbreak and reopened its economy relatively quickly. Latin America and the Caribbean is the most affected developing region. International transport problems slow down regional trade.
