How many of you remember Brix? The police horse that left on the June truck of 2025?

It has been a true privilege to care for this special boy after the end of his career. From the racetrack, to serving in the Mounted Section and finally into our care to help him find the retirement he deserved 🏡

Every time we look at him we are reminded of how proud we are to have been entrusted with his future.

Quetzal holds a very special place in our hearts not only because of who he is but because he became the very first retired Mounted Section police horse in Malta's history to be rehomed abroad and that was done by our organisation! 😊

A horse that served his country and now gets to enjoy the peaceful retirement he worked so hard for ❤️🇲🇹🐴

Our July Horse Sponsorship Programme is now open and we are launching it early in the hope that each of our permanent residents will have a sponsor waiting for them by the start of the month 🙏🏼 For €50 you can sponsor one of our sanctuary horses for the entire month of July. These horses are our forever residents. Due to age, behavioral or physical issues they are unlikely to ever find a home of their own and will most likely spend the rest of their lives with us. Some have been here for years and a few have been with us since the very beginning of Second Chance Horse Rescue ❤️ The big majority of the horses we take in are rehome able and help us in fundraising activities so raise funds towards our bills, but these horses don’t but they still need to eat and require as much costs if not more than a healthy horse.

We currently have 20+ permanent residents who rely on us every single day and we would love to find each of them a sponsor for July.

🐴 What happens when you sponsor?

Local sponsors are welcome to visit their sponsored horse, help with feeding and grooming, take them for a walk and spend quality time with them (Need to speak to one of the members of the team wether the horse being sponsored is safe and suitable to do so)

🌍 Sponsors living abroad will receive updates on their sponsored horse throughout the month so you can follow their journey and see the difference your support is making.

🤝🏼 Ultimately every sponsorship directly helps us care for that specific horse with the funds going towards their daily needs so instead of us having to worry how we are going to raise funds for those horses that unfortunately are difficult to rehome, we can know that they have someone helping us towards their care and ultimately we can continue simultaneously helping the healthier horses that can be rehomed abroad.

Over a year ago we took in this beautiful boy and not once have we received a single application for him ❤️‍🩹

Dondon is a 13 year old French gelding who has been patiently waiting for someone to choose him. Dondon is partially blind in his right eye and we believe that may be why he keeps getting overlooked 🥺 The reality is that his eyesight doesn't stop him from enjoying life. This isn't a recent issue but something he has lived with for years and he copes incredibly well.

For over a year Dondon has watched other horses come and go while he remains in the same paddock still hoping that one day someone will see beyond his imperfection and give him the chance he deserves ❤️

We would absolutely love to find Dondon a home on our next truck to the UK 🇬🇧 A place with green fields, kind people, and a family who will love him exactly as he is.

Dondon has no known health issues apart from the partial blindness in his right eye. He gets on well with other horses and has a lovely nature and we genuinely believe he would make a fantastic happy hacker and companion. He has been with us for over a year, and we only got the chance to sit on him just twice. We know the right person will be bring him on and do well 😊
