The Exterminator

Every giant colony starts somewhere...
This tiny structure is the very first stage of an Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) nest.
At this point, the entire nest has been built by a single queen after emerging from hibernation. She constructs the first paper cells from chewed wood fibres, lays her eggs, and single-handedly feeds the developing larvae until the first workers emerge. Only then does the colony begin to grow rapidly.
What may look like an insignificant cluster of a few paper cells today can, within a few months, develop into a thriving colony containing hundreds of hornets.
As a pest management consultant, I find it fascinating to witness these early stages of colony establishment. Understanding the biology of these insects not only helps us appreciate their remarkable engineering skills but also allows us to manage them responsibly when they become a risk to people.
Nature reminds us that even the largest colonies begin with just one determined queen.
