Most people guess this wreck wrong.

The clip looks calm, almost easy… and that’s exactly why HMS Stubborn catches people out.

Two CCR divers cruising a WWII submarine feels like a film scene, but this is still a proper XR dive with depth, real planning, and zero room for sloppy basics.

The common mistake we see with “bucket list” wrecks is treating them like a trophy. Depth becomes the headline, and the dive becomes a rush. The wreck does not care.

What most divers misunderstand is that Malta’s best tech dives aren’t about drama. They’re about precision. When the plan is clean, the dive feels quiet.

A few quick facts, because the history matters:

- HMS Stubborn was an S-class Royal Navy submarine, launched 11 November 1942.
- After WWII service, she was deliberately sunk on 30 April 1946 as part of a sonar (ASDIC) training programme.
- Today she lies about 3 km north-east of St Paul’s Bay / Qawra Point, upright with a slight starboard list, on sand at roughly 45–57 m.

If you’re thinking of adding Malta to your tech calendar, here’s what usually makes the difference:

- Build the dive around stability, not pe*******on goals
- Treat the descent like the dive, not the commute
- Run clean team roles (who leads, who times, who navigates)
- Plan for clarity under task load, not best-case conditions
- Leave Malta with skills improved, not just footage captured

That’s the kind of diving we’re into at DIVE SYSTEMS Malta, an SSI XR centre focused on deep wreck exploration and training, Extended Range and Trimix on CCR and OC.

Question: if you could do one Malta wreck, what would your top pick?

Save this if Malta’s on your tech list, and share it with the teammate you plan trips with.

Travel divers often overpack random extras and underpack the essentials. The best dive travel kits are usually simpler, lighter and built around what you actually use.
