Bipolar Disorder: Painting with side effects.

I have never hidden the fact that I live with bipolar disorder. What I have not talked about as openly is what the medication does to me, and what I have had to invent, physically and mentally, to keep painting anyway. This is the story of living with bipolar disorder and painting with the side effects of medication.

The hands that shake.

One of the side effects of my medication is tremor. I take three different medicines twice daily to control my moods. My hands shake, sometimes lightly and sometimes, when I am tired, making a straight line become a small challenge. For a painter...

The Zafer Style - How a Zafer Painting is Made: Technique and Craft

It begins with a decision: what is this painting about, and what do I want the viewer to feel when they look at it? These two questions sound simple, but they contain everything. Before a single mark is made, the subject must be chosen with intention, and that intention must be clear enough to survive the entire process of making the work...

Project 195 is a historic global creative movement by 13AM Studio with the mission to unite artists from every single country on Earth. The project aims to break down international barriers, spotlight underrepresented cultures, and build the world's first global art collection featuring all 195 nations. I am so happy to be part of this initiative.

Introducing Artist 363 | Pascal Lagesse Mauritian Artist 🇲🇺

Pascal Lagesse is a self-taught painter based from Mauritius, whose artistic practice spans more than four decades. Inspired by the landscapes, people and cultural heritage of his island home, he has developed a distinctive visual style known as Zafer; a vibrant artistic language characterised by colourful geometric forms, bold outlines and expressive compositions. His work frequently celebrates iconic elements of Mauritian life, from the dodo and dramatic mountain ranges to coastal scenes and everyday moments rooted in local culture.

Influenced by artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, as well as the rich visual traditions of Aboriginal Australian art, Pascal’s paintings sit at the crossroads of Neo-Expressionism, Pattern Art, Fauvism and Naïve Folk Art. Through his joyful use of colour and unmistakable sense of place, he creates work that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable, exploring themes of belonging, memory and identity.

Pascal becomes our first artist representing Mauritius in Project 195, bringing a unique artistic perspective shaped by island life and cultural storytelling to our growing global creative movement.
