Day 2 of the “Sathuhatti: Kulhudhuffushi City” workshop helped participants re-contextualise some of the contemporary socio-environmental issues in the island through the lens of prior destructive development. It introduced participants to the Triple Planetary Crisis, including the ways in which the impacts of climate change manifest in the Maldives, alongside case studies on the forms of advocacy that have been used by local activists to seek accountability from decision-makers. Participants also ranked previously-identified sustainability issues in order of priority and prepared to brainstorm solutions.

Day 1 of the “Sathuhatti: Kulhudhuffushi City” workshop introduced participants to the concepts of sustainability, intersectionality, and environmental citizenship, with a particular focus on state governance and environmental legislation. Additionally, participants engaged in mapping exercises, where their observations from the field visits earlier in the day informed their identification of sustainability-related issues in the community.

Both “Kalhibithe Salla” events were designed to facilitate governance-related discussions among young people in an informal and stress-free setting.

The first day saw conversations revolving mostly around recent occurrences in Addu that participants found concerning, including the rapid loss of landscape integrity, mass vegetation clearance and tree uprooting, and the questionable efforts towards urbanisation.

On the second day, we unpacked how social accountability tools can be used to address issues from the previous chat, with a spotlight on the use of RTI and a brief overview of whistleblowing and social audits.

After two iterations of “Sathuhatti” in Addu, we’re expanding outward and are now seeking the input of young people from Kulhudhuffushi and Laamu atoll. Join us on a three-day youth camp on sustainability, environmental citizenship, civic education, and activism, with field-based learning and the co-development of solutions to community issues with local stakeholders.

This project is being carried out with funding from the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program.

The silly little sheep movie we watched last night turned out to have much deeper undertones. It was a movie about grief, remembering, belonging and so many other things.

We’re mobilising against the planned land reclamation at Moolekede Fishimathi as a precursor to the planned World Environment Day activities. It is our constitutional and moral duty to protect and preserve the environment, and we cannot let such short-sighted, politically-aligned, unsustainable, and overall destructive projects encroach onto our natural heritage and climate resilience.

We’ll have canoeing and various other activities through which you can voice your views and demonstrate against this destruction. We’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have about the project. Come join us from 15:00 to 18:00 at Fishimathi.
