In early 2024, the entire nation of Malawi essentially lost the ability to issue passports overnight due to a sophisticated cyberattack?
What was initially dismissed by officials as a mere "technical glitch" was soon revealed to be a serious national security breach.
A group of "digital mercenaries" had breached the Department of Immigration's e-passport system, encrypting critical data and holding the country's passport issuance hostage.
The attackers demanded a substantial ransom for the system's release. However, Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera took a firm stance: the government would not bow to the demands of cybercriminals.
This decision meant a prolonged period where thousands of Malawians were unable to obtain or renew essential travel documents, creating a national crisis.
The attack not only exposed vulnerabilities in the country's digital infrastructure but also highlighted the growing threat of international cyber warfare.
While the data itself was eventually recovered, the incident forced Malawi to completely overhaul its system. The government worked tirelessly to build a new, more secure e-passport platform, resuming services in phases and introducing online applications to better safeguard against future threats.
The story serves as a stark reminder that even fundamental government services can be paralyzed by a single malicious hack.

In November 1988, a 23-year-old student accidentally launched what became the first large-scale internet worm (The Morris Worm—1988). It spread across thousands of computers running UNIX, exploiting weaknesses in email services, password systems and a debugging program.
The worm was supposed to be “harmless research,” but a small bug made it replicate too quickly causing machines to slow down, crash and become unusable. At the time this brought down almost 10% of the entire internet which was tiny but critical to universities and the government.
This single event forced the world to take cybersecurity seriously for the first time and it even led to the creation of the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).
🔍A tiny coding mistake can turn into a massive cyber disaster.

Did you know that in 2000, a computer worm called ILOVEYOU spread across the world in just a few days? 💻❤️
It arrived in people’s inboxes with the subject line “ILOVEYOU” and an attachment that looked harmless. But when opened it copied itself to everyone in the victim’s contact list and overwrote important files, causing billions of dollars in damage! 😱
One click turned curiosity into chaos... showing the world how dangerous trusting emails blindly can be.
Lesson: Always be careful with attachments even if they look friendly.??
