Malawi has the highest petrol price in Africa at USD 3.83 per litre, nearly double that of Zimbabwe at USD 2.08 per litre, the second most expensive country on this list of Africa's top ten highest petrol prices.

The gap is most likely driven by limited forex availability, import costs, and global supply chain pressures. Since Malawi is landlocked and imports all of its fuel, every litre purchased draws directly from the country's foreign exchange reserves.

Malawi currently exports macadamia nuts to more than 9 international markets across regions, including South Africa, the USA, Europe, and East Asia.

With global macadamia demand expected to grow significantly by 2030, Malawi is well-positioned to benefit from this expanding market.

The country’s growing export footprint creates opportunities for increased foreign exchange earnings, rural employment, investment in agriculture, and stronger long-term economic growth.

As demand continues to rise, Malawi’s macadamia industry has the potential to become one of the country’s key agricultural success stories.

Malawi’s cost of living continues to rise.

Estimated monthly living costs for a family of 6 (covering both food and non-food items) increased from about K694,653 in January 2025 to over K1 million in January 2026.

While there were brief periods of price relief, the overall trend shows sustained increases in basic needs like food, transport, housing, and utilities.

This points to the growing importance of budgeting, income planning, and cost awareness in everyday financial decisions for both households and businesses.
