Children are not safe where they should be—and that’s a crisis we must confront!

Recent reports shared by Mary Navicha, Minister of Gender and Social Welfare in Parliament, reveal a painful reality. Many cases of child sexual abuse in Malawi are happening in homes, schools, and communities—places meant to protect children.
Some of these cases involve:
• Brothers and close family members
• Parents concealing abuse
• Teachers and head teachers
• Community and traditional leaders
• Even law enforcement
While girls are heavily affected, boys are also being abused and often in silence.
This is exactly why GEM runs the “My Body Belongs To Me” program for children aged 5–10.
Because the truth is:
- Children cannot rely only on adults for protection
- Many are too young to recognize abuse
- Silence and stigma keep them trapped
- Everyday situations can expose them to danger

Through this program, GEM equips children to:
- Understand that their body belongs to them
- Recognize safe vs unsafe touch
- Know that even a “trusted person” can be unsafe
- Speak up without fear or shame
- Report abuse and seek help early
We use age-appropriate tools such as stories, play, songs, and safe conversations to make these lessons stick.
We believe that prevention must start early—
- Before abuse happens.
- Before silence takes root.
- Before a child loses their voice.
Let’s break the silence. Let’s protect our children. Let’s empower them with knowledge.
