We, Johanna Åhs (Sweden) and Enelless Pemba (Malawi) met in South Africa in 2016 as we were working at Africa Unite, a organisation working with Humans Rights. Our passion for human rights gave us the idea to start Chikondi Girls Project.
We are working with the SDG 2030 and we are focusing on; Goal no 4: Equal Education; ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Goal no 5; Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. We have chosen to call our project Chikondi Girls Project as Chikondi means Love in Malawi. Menstrual hygiene is a question about human rights and all girls has the right to manage their periods hygienically and with dignity. Sanitary towels can both be unavailable and unaffordable for some girls and this has a huge impact on their lives. Not having access to safe sanitary towels can prevent or force the girls from going to school. Which exacerbates inequality. When girls miss several days of school a month, they are more likely to drop out, this could also lead to early child marriage We want to change this. We want every girl to have access to safe and hygienic sanitary towels and for every girl to stay in school.
In Malawi, some girls using towels, newspaper or a cloth during menstruation due to the lack of sanitary towels. We want to break the silence, shame, taboo and stigma. Chikondi Girls Project wants to raise awareness on menstrual hygiene. Due to the taboo many girls have never heard about menstruation before their first period and we want to teach the girls about the female body to prepare them for their first period and address the myth around menstruation.
Through this project, our aim is to teach girls how to make their own sanitary towels from local material, give knowledge on the female body, break the taboo, give knowledge on entrepreneurship, human rights as well as self-empowerment. We want to make it fun to create one owns sanitary towels as we are using art as a tool. During a girl’s menstruation she is at risk of missing out of school. Our goal is to help girls to access safe sanitary towels and to stay in school. By teaching the girls about menstrual hygiene this enables girls to manage their periods hygienically and with dignity.

Vi arbetar utifrån de globala målen för hållbar utveckling 2030, vilka är: Mål nr 4: Säkerställa en inkluderande och jämlik utbildning av god kvalitet och främja livslångt lärande för alla. Mål nr 5: Uppnå jämställdhet, och alla kvinnors och flickors egenmakt. Vi har valt att kalla projektet för Chikondi Girls Projekt då Chikondi betyder Kärlek i Malawi. Mens är en fråga om mänskliga rättigheter och alla flickor borde ha rätt till att ha mens med värdighet. I Malawi är mens förknippat med utebliven skolgång och skam och detta vill vi ändra på. Vi vill hjälpa flickor på landsbygden i Malawi till säkra mensskydd och en säker skolgång.
I Malawi använder många flickor tidningspapper, strumpor eller ett tygstycke under menstruation då de inte har tillgång till fungerande mensskydd. Många flickor stannar hemma från skolan då de är oroliga för röda fläckar på skoluniformen då man i Malawi måste man stå upp i klassen för att svara på frågor. Detta gör att flickorna missar skoldagar varje månad och riskerar att falla ur skolan helt.
Chikondi Girls Project vars syfte är att erbjuda flickor i Malawi utbildning att sy egna mensskydd av lokala material, ge kunskap om kvinnokroppen, arbeta för att bryta tabun omkring mens, ge kunskap om entreprenörskap, om mänskliga rättigheter samt workshops för att ge flickorna ökad självkänsla. Vi vill göra det roligt att tillverka egna mensskydd och även använda konst som ett verktyg för att avdramatisera mens-frågan.
