He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the iconic 1983 cartoon, was always a difficult property to adapt faithfully into live action. Its blend of sci-fi, fantasy, larger-than-life heroes, and the world of Eternia demanded visual effects technology that simply wasn’t available back then. It has taken over 40 years for a true big-screen reboot to arrive, and the wait was definitely worth it.

This reboot successfully captures the spirit of the original while updating it for a modern audience. Rather than presenting He-Man as the already-perfect “Most Powerful Man in the Universe,” the film gives us a more human, relatable version of the character. As an origin story, it works well and lays the groundwork for his future evolution.

The movie even has fun with some of the quirky names and elements from the original series, but it does so with affection. Despite the modern touches and humor, there’s still plenty here that transports fans back to the fantasy world they fell in love with in 1983.

While Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Revolution explored a more mature and evolved storyline, this film wisely chooses to start fresh. It feels like the beginning of a new franchise and builds on the renewed interest generated by the 2021 He-Man animated series, nearly 20 years after the 2002 reboot.

My inner child is incredibly happy with this movie. It’s the closest adaptation to the original cartoon we’ve seen on the big screen.

There is room for improvement. In fact, Skeletor and several supporting characters arguably have stronger costume designs than He-Man himself. Hopefully, future installments will evolve his look as he grows into becoming the true Most Powerful Man in the Universe.

Overall, this is an exciting, entertaining, and respectful reboot that gives longtime fans plenty to celebrate while welcoming a new generation to Eternia.

⚔️ And yes... stay for the end credits. There are TWO post-credit scenes, and both are worth watching.
