Spider's Web on the Foot,

Understanding Lower Extremity Varicose Veins

The bruised skin on the legs is usually the result of varicose veins in the lower limbs. The affected limbs often feel sore, heavy, swelling and painful, easily fatigued and weak. Some patients may have mild edema in the ankle and dorsum of the foot, and in severe cases, there may also be mild edema in the lower part of the calf.

Varicose veins are commonly known as "floating hamstrings" because they are maintained in the same position for a long time and lack of muscle movement, which prevents blood from returning to the heart by force, resulting in high venous pressure over time and causing varicose veins. In general, women are more likely to have varicose veins than men.

The causes of varicose veins are related to physical and genetic factors, including obesity, pregnancy, prolonged standing, hormone use, increased abdominal pressure and aging. Initially, the symptoms are not obvious, but as the disease worsens, the blood remains in the lower extremities for a long time, which increases the venous pressure and hinders blood circulation. The swollen veins tend to put pressure on the surrounding sensory nerves, causing swelling and pain in the lower extremities, muscle cramps in the lower legs, and itching on the inner side; in severe cases, it may cause edema, venous thrombosis, depressive dermatitis, subcutaneous pigmentation, bleeding, and long-term skin ulcers that are difficult to heal, and may even cause malignant lesions.
