When wan tan mee meets wat tan hor! ๐
This place has established itself as an institution for wan tan mee in Penag. Established over 60 years ago and currently managed by the second generation, it specialises in just one thing: "lor" wan tan mee.
The noodles here have all the components of a regular wan tan meeโwan tan noodles, wan tans (it comes with fried by default, but I opted for the healthier boiled version ๐ฌ), char siu, and chai sim (mustard green). But instead of dark soy sauce, the noodles are doused in a slightly thickened egg gravy similar to wat tan hor, which is called "lor" in Penang. It also comes topped with slices of mushroom and chicken. I think pairing it with pickled green chili is the best, though they also serve sambal belacan.
While it's slightly pricier than regular wan tan mee, the portion size and the amount of "liao" (toppings) are substantial. It's constantly crowded, especially on weekends.
Wan Tan Mee - RM8.50

๐Viet Jln Two Food Cafe

An unpretentious Vietnamese gem ๐โค๏ธ.
This eateryโs modest exterior belies the heart within. Behind the sliding door, a friendly Malaysian man and his Vietnamese wife serve up homey comfort food.
The Beef Pho is the undisputed starโrich, deeply savoury, and generously loaded with meat. While the chicken pho is delicious, the beef pho wins. Another highlight is the Beef Stew Banh Mi; the baguette is incredibly crispy on the outside and soft fluffy within, served alongside a mild, super tender stew. The slightly sweet-salty lemongrass marinaded BBQ Pork Chop was addictive too.
The unapologetically bold Vietnamese Coffee gave me an instant caffeine jolt with just 1 sip ๐,
Noticed the prices here are more affordable than most, plus the plain water is free and there's no service charge.

Chicken pho - RM12

Hidden gem ๐ claypot fish curry.
The buzzing Under The Tree Lengkok Burma hawker centre is all quiet down come evening. Ah Boy Curry Fish Head - run by a friendly Hokkien speaking Indian family, is the only store open for dinner.
Iโm so glad the heavy rain and traffic forced us to stop hereโit turned out to be amazing. We opted for a small slice of red snapper cooked in curry, which arrived in a large claypot, still bubbling and loaded with veggies like lady's fingers, brinjals, tomatoes, and onions. The curry is strong and tangy yet not overly spicy. We also ordered a simple onion fried eggโthe perfect sponge for that addictive gravy ๐.
Everything is cooked to order, so expect a bit of a wait. They also serve fried chicken, clams, prawns, and squid. Iโll definitely be adding the squid to my order next time! ๐

Old Soon Kee

What an enjoyable meal!
With its simple shop-front, itโs easy to dismiss this unassuming spot as just another roasted meat joint. But we were in for a real treat!
Their signature jade green noodles are lightly seasoned with soy sauce, letting the vibrant color of the noodles shine. The roasted meats were all really tenderโeven the chicken and duck breasts. The roasted chicken skin had a nice aroma, and the char siu (BBQ pork) is an absolute MUST. Itโs perfectly charred and literally melts in your mouth.
We couldn't resist the or kueh (yam cake) and chwee kueh (steamed rice cake) too. Both were awesome: the yam cake with actual chunks of yam and topped with a generous amount of dried shrimp and shallots, while the soft rice cakes were loaded with savory chai poh (preserved radish).
Initially, we didn't even realize from the outside that they have a large, comfortable dining area right next door! ๐
Total : RM68.50 for 4 bowls of noodles, 1 plate of rice, yam cake, rice cake, drinks

Is this the last old-school charcoal pork porridge in town?
Tucked away in the far corner of the food court, this stall is run by a friendly uncle who still cooks every bowl individually over flaming hot charcoal. The menu offers "chok" (thick Cantonese-style porridge), "moay" (soupy Teochew-style porridge), "misua" (thin wheat noodles), and "bihun" (rice vermicelli).
I stopped by for a midweek dinner and found several tablesโmostly elderly regularsโalready there patiently waiting for their nourishing broth. When my bowl of "moay" finally arrived, it was well worth the wait. It was piping hot, incredibly flavourful and perfectly seasoned. with tender chunks of minced meat. The fried garlic on top gave it an extra boost! ๐
Hours: 12:30 PM โ 8:00 PM (or until sold out, whichever earlier).
Note: Closed every Tuesday.

๐Lhong Tou Dim Sum

Is there such a thing as too much prawns? ๐ค๐ค๐ค ๐
After a few failed attempts due to the long queues, we finally scored a table on a mid-week morning! The menu is extensive, ranging from classic to premium bites.. We went with all our usual must-haves, and every dish was perfectly executedโso refined.
The chee cheong fun (steamed rice roll), siew mai, and shrimp dumplings were stuffed with so much prawns; it really reminds me of the ones in HK. Also, the char siew pao is a must-try: thin skin and fully loaded with yummy pork!
Itโs a bit pricier than average, but the quality is indeed different.
Note to self : next time avoid a table directly under the fan so the dim sum doesn't get cold so quickly!
Total : RM141.50, after 10% Service Charge, 6% SST and RM2 rebate for car park

๐๐จ๐ค๐ค๐ข๐๐ง ๐๐๐ - 1 Name 3 Dishes - ๐น๐๐
, ๐พ๐๐๐ฉ๐ or ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐๐
The mention of Hokkien Mee (็ฆๅปบ้ข) is enough to start an argument between ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฃ๐ (people from Penang), ๐๐ณ๐๐๐๐ (people from Kuala Lumpur), and ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐๐ค๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐คช.
If you're wondering why, it's because Hokkien Mee in Penang, KL, and Singapore are totally differentโthey are entirely different dishes, in fact. So yeah, we will start fighting over whose is the original and most entitled to the name ๐คช. But fret not, it is all done in good spirit and for good fun.
Though they are different, to me they are all ๐ ๐ข๐๐ฆ ๐ด๐๐ฎ๐ delicious ๐. Let me walk you through each version by the color ๐.
๐พ๐๐๐ฉ๐ โ ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ Hokkien Mee is a savory stir-fried noodle dish featuring yellow noodles and rice vermicelli braised in a rich prawn and pork broth, mixed with prawns, pork, and egg, then served with spicy sambal chili and lime for a zesty finish. It's usually whitish in color.
๐ฉ๐ก๐๐๐ โ ๐๐ณ Hokkien Mee (also known as F**k Kin Mean in Cantonese or Tai Lok Mee in Penang) is a dark, glossy masterpiece of thick yellow noodles braised in a savory-sweet dark soy sauce and infused with smoky "wok hei", all topped off with the essential crunch of golden fried pork lard. It is always eaten with a side of sambal belacan (chili paste with shrimp paste) for that extra umami.
๐น๐๐
โ Funnily, AI describes the ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ฃ๐ Hokkien Mee as the vibrant, fiery, and soul-warming cousin ๐. In short, it is a bowl of noodle soup in a rich, spicy broth made from prawn shells and pork bones. It gets its reddish color from the prawns and sambal.
