Sincerity (Ikhlas) vs Showing off (Riya')
Mahmud bin Labid (RAA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
إنَّ أخْوَفَ ما أخافُ عليكم الشِّركُ الأصْغَرُ، قالوا: وما الشِّركُ الأصْغَرُ يا رسولَ اللهِ؟ قال: الرِّياءُ؛ يقولُ اللهُ عزَّ وجلَّ لهم يومَ القِيامةِ إذا جُزِيَ الناسُ بأعمالِهم: اذْهَبوا إلى الذين كنتُم تُراؤون في الدُّنيا، فانظُروا هل تَجِدون عِندَهُم جزاءً
“The thing I am most afraid of happening to you is a little Shirk. The Companions asked: what is minor shirk, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet said: That is Riya’. Allah SWT will say on the Day of Resurrection: go to the people you want to show your deeds to in the world and see if they have a reward (because of your deeds)”.
