🧸How Big is Your But🧸

Have you ever heard your child say, "I want to try out for the team, but I'm not good enough," or "I’d love to answer that question, but I'm too shy"? These little "buts" can grow into big barriers, holding them back from their true potential.

Recently I took my students for an outing at the wall climbing park in Putrajaya, and many of them were scared at first. They looked up at the towering wall and said, "I want to climb it, but I'm too scared."

With some encouragement and a few deep breaths, they began to tackle the wall, one step at a time. The more they climbed, the more their confidence grew. By the end of the day, those initial fears were replaced with smiles and high-fives. Their "buts" had shrunk dramatically!

⭐️Tips to Break Free from Limiting Beliefs⭐️

Catch the "Buts" Early:

Whenever you hear a "but" that sounds like a limiting belief, point it out gently. Turn it into a game: “How can we make this 'but' smaller?”

Reframe the Belief:

Help your child reframe their limiting beliefs. If they say, "I can't do math," encourage them to add "yet" to the end: "I can't do math...yet!"

Celebrate Small Wins:

Celebrate their efforts and progress, no matter how small. Did they try something new, even if it didn’t go perfectly? Throw a mini celebration!

Model Positive Self-Talk:

Show them how you handle your own "buts." Share your experiences and how you overcame them. Kids learn a lot by watching us!

Encourage Curiosity:

Instead of focusing on being the best, encourage them to be curious and enjoy the process of learning and trying new things.

Remember, those little "buts" might seem harmless now, but they can grow if we’re not careful. By helping our children tackle their limiting beliefs, we set them up for a lifetime of confidence and resilience.

Try telling that to a younger me who had worked her guts out to get that distinction in my assignment.. only to find out my results were not as expected... or when I'm stuck in traffic for a meeting only to reach 2 hours later and meeting was over by the time I arrived.. or when it's like life is just throwing challenges after challenges on a day that I wish I could just curl up in bed..

Let's be honest here.. we would have at some point in our lives experienced moments where we questioned our existence.. got angry.. frustrated.. and just felt like giving up.. isn't it 🤔

Well... let me invite you to consider this.. these challenges, disappointments, stressful moments, anger, frustration.. are ADVERSITY that we face head on with a training and lesson in life... to make us stronger, build and develop those muscles 💪🏻 to give us STRENGTH to overcome it and shine ✨️
