The Mind Hub: A Proposal of Low Carbon Office for University of Malaya

“The ambition in this project, aside from designing a low carbon office, is to create a tranquil space for vulnerable groups of students or staff of University Malaya, who wish to seek counselling and therapist consultations.

The building touches the earth lightly with the elevations being governed by the ramp that follows the slope of the earth towards the Varsity Lake. The absence of walls in the lobby allows the wind to carry the scent of herbs from the wall planting that faces the east and west of the building. This atmosphere sets the perfect environment that facilitates the healing of the visitors. The building complex is designed for everyone including the physically abled and disabled. With therapeutic spaces in mind, we want the users to experience the spaces with their 5 senses - see, hear, taste, smell and touch.

All spaces are united under the big roof while being connected to each other by therapeutic green space. The big roof also emphasises the more humane & domestic scale of the smaller units underneath – thus creating this sense of friendliness & openness towards their visitors. Besides the visitors, the building also aims to provide a calming work environment to the staff so they are able to cater to the needs of the visitors.

Overall, ‘The Mind Hub’ is humble and unassuming. We think it fits our intended programme in being a centre that highlights the importance of mental health among the students and staff of University Malaya.”
