Muhammadsuriyee’s upbringing is deeply grounded in Islamic teachings. For him, the mosque is more than just an architectural structure or a symbol; it is understood as an organised system that shapes time, movement, and social interactions. The mosque influences how people gather, pray, learn, and engage with one another. Islamic philosophy, which emphasises consistency, discipline, and repetition, shapes not only his worldview but also the foundation of his artistic practice.
The repetition seen in the visuals of the 'Faith' series reflects Islamic practices rooted in regularity and discipline, such as zikr (remembrance of God) and the five daily prayers. The steady rhythm of the forms mirrors the consistent rhythm of religious life. 'Faith' is portrayed not as a moment of transcendence or a break from the ordinary, but rather as a series of small, repeated actions that foster balance and continuity.
'Faith' by Muhammadsuriyee Masu opens this Thursday, February 12th at 7.30pm.
