Decarbonizing heavy industries is one of the biggest challenges in the energy transition. For sectors such as chemicals, oil & gas, steel, and cement, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) offers a practical route to reduce CO₂ emissions.
However, successful CCUS deployment requires more than capture technology. It needs structured planning, process safety, asset integrity, and reliable operations.
Learn how CCUS is driving decarbonization across heavy industries in SynergenOG’s blog: https://synergenog.com/ccus-driving-decarbonization-heavy-industries/
Fire hazards in oil and gas are not uniform. Different fire types behave differently and present distinct risks to personnel and facilities.
Flash fires involve rapid flame propagation through a flammable gas cloud. These events are typically short in duration, often lasting less than three seconds, but can still cause severe burns and fatalities.
Jet fires occur when flammable gas or liquid is released under pressure and ignites, producing a high-velocity flame with significant heat intensity and potential structural impact.
Pool fires result from ignited spills of flammable liquids. They can spread quickly and generate high levels of radiant heat, affecting nearby equipment and structures.
Confined space fires are particularly hazardous due to restricted access, limited ventilation, and the potential for pressure build-up.
Recognising these differences is important. Each fire type requires a different approach to prevention, detection, and mitigation.
In the next post, we look at explosion hazards and how they develop in oil and gas operations.

When should you conduct a HAZID study?
A HAZID study helps decision makers identify Major Accident Hazards early, before layout choices, process interfaces, brownfield modifications, or operating scenarios become costly project risks.
This video explains when to conduct a HAZID study and why it is critical during concept selection, FEED, detailed design, Management of Change, and facility modifications. It also shows how a structured, multidisciplinary workshop can turn hazards into clear safeguards, ranked risks, practical recommendations, and assigned actions.
For HSE leaders, project directors, engineering managers, operations teams, and EPC contractors, early hazard identification supports stronger assurance, smoother approvals, safer operations, and better capital project decisions.
