Chinese scientists are developing laser-powered submarines, aiming to achieve speeds comparable to jet engines, according to reports.

Engineers at Harbin Engineering University claim to be on the verge of success with this technology. By generating plasma underwater using lasers, they create a “detonation wave” to propel the submarine.

Coated in thin optical fibers emitting laser power, the vessels could potentially produce significant thrust, reaching speeds surpassing the sound barrier.

This advancement underscores China’s efforts in underwater weapons research, sparking concerns in the United States about a potential submarine arms race.
