Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal hereditary disease. It affects mainly the respiratory system, digestive system, and sweat glands. This multi-system genetic disease is usually diagnosed in infancy or early childhood, but may be diagnosed later in life.

The incidence is 1 in 15,000 African Americans. As per the 2008 cystic fibrosis registry, there are 30,000 people with this disease in the US.

The common manifestations of cystic fibrosis are production of thick, viscous secretions in the lungs that block passage of air resulting in frequent and repeated respiratory problems. Commonly, a child with cystic fibrosis manifests a range of symptoms including chronic coughing and fever, difficulty of breathing, and poor appetite. The disease can often be treated at home with a special diet and antibiotics.

The aim of treatment is to provide symptomatic relief and slow down the disease progression achieved with the help of medications, physical therapy, exercise, and proper supplementation.
