The first "cameras" were used not to create images but to study optics. The Arab scholar Ibn Al-Haytham (945–1040), also known as Alhazen, is generally credited as being the first person to study how we see. He invented the camera obscura, the precursor to the pinhole camera, to demonstrate how light can be used to project an image onto a flat surface. Earlier references to the camera obscura have been found in Chinese texts dating to about 400 B.C. and in the writings of Aristotle around 330 B.C.

One of the best tools for a photographer is a good photo editor app. Adobe Lightroom is among the best. The mobile version has a lot of the same features as the desktop version. That includes support for RAW photos, the ability to easily revert back to the original if needed, and more. You can also send the files to your desktop version if needed. Most of the features in the app are free. However, you can get more features if you’re an existing Adobe Creative Cloud subscriber. It’s pretty good for serious photography.

The best budget mirrorless camera is Canon’s EOS M200. For $550 including a 15-45mm kit lens, you get a 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor that delivers sharp shots with natural colors and skin tones. It also comes with a flip-up display and 4K 24p video, albeit with a significant crop. The biggest downsides are the lack of a viewfinder, limited lens selection and relatively slow burst shooting speeds. Honorable mention in this category goes to $599 Canon’s M50 II, a mildly refreshed version of the M50 with features like a flip-out screen, tap-to-record and focus, plus 4K video with a 1.5x crop.
