Reasons for Engine Oil Blackening

1. Soot
In the engine combustion process, soot and other impurities are generated and the detergent additives in the engine oil have the responsibility to keep the engine internal surfaces clean. These soot particles in the engine oil turn it black. However, since soot handling is important, blackening of oil because of soot indicates oil is performing its job well!

2. Heat Cycles / oxidation
Oxidation process occurs when oil molecules interact with oxygen molecules and cause chemical breakdown. The higher temperature acts as a catalyst and accelerates the oxidation process. Oxidation darkens the oil and turns it black. Oxidation residues are acidic they tend to reduce oil life.

3. Wear / contamination
Contamination of oil with external contaminants and wear metals can also tend to turn the oil black. This can be detected only through oil analysis.
