Filmco
A video production company with a mission to tell the authentic stories of brands. Est 2013.
Telling the stories of others has always come naturally to me, but when the lens turns on the person behind the camera, it becomes the hardest thing. That person is me.
While it is easier for me to listen and document other people’s lives, I fail to do so for my own. It is like the tallest mountain in the world to conquer, for me to share anything good about myself. It took 2 weeks of me brooding on the voice over, the edit, the visuals and even this caption that you’re reading.
Growing up, my mum taught me to be humble, to not speak loudly about oneself. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that this belief can hold us back. While the habit of staying quiet runs deep, I know it’s time to let go of that false modesty. Sam, you can’t just hide behind the camera forever, it’s time you share your own stories too. So here I am, challenging myself to love and acknowledge “Sam” more.
Deep down, I know I want to share my journey, to inspire others to believe in themselves and chase what truly matters. I started filmmaking at 25, with no clear direction—just a belief in the power of stories to change lives.
I had no idea that we stood a chance in winning, till it was announced that Filmco was a finalist for Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards for best promotion contribution to the tourism industry. When my name was announced, I felt a gush, of mixed feelings, proud, and emotional, as it holds so much more than just an award. I have to step up to receive this honour. and we won an award that recognised our creative efforts!
If you’re one of us, don’t stop believing in what you do. I know it’s easy to feel dismay when everything we do doesn’t seem to create the outcome we wish to see. But don’t give up. Today’s achievements are the fruits of seeds planted long ago. Every little step we take, as minuscule as it may seem, is slowly moving us closer to where we wish to go in life.
I want to thank the people that believed in me before I do, and invested themselves in the decisions I make. Lastly, I want to thank me, for never give up on yourself. You are great.
Michael is one of the rare whimsical artist that l've met, everything seem so beautiful through his eyes.
So hopeful about life, art and the the next generation of artists. I can't wait to visit him again, and doc some of his artistic process.
This is one of the 12 pieces of stories told for the winners of Hasanah Gold Threads Awards 24.
