Tengah Island Conservation
Every year, a big portion of food produced globally goes to waste. In landfills, this food decomposes without oxygen, releasing methane gas that traps atmospheric heat at up to 80 times the rate of carbon dioxide.
This World Environment Day, we are changing that narrative in Pulau Besar, Johor.
By uniting local communities and tourism operators, we intercept organic waste at the source and channel it into our food composter at Rumah Eko. The result is nutrient-rich compost distributed directly back to the islanders.
Pulau Besar’s sandy soil naturally struggles to retain water. This locally produced compost restores the soil structure, drastically improving water retention and empowering the community to grow resilient crops. We have turned a critical climate threat into a local agricultural asset.
Climate change is visible, local, and immediate. Healing the planet starts with modifying our simplest everyday routines.

Coastal resilience starts with the right roots.
Native trees serve as vital living shields, specifically evolved to withstand the salt, wind, and sandy conditions that define our shorelines.
These plants are engineered by nature to protect both the land and the delicate local ecosystem from the harsh marine environment.
As part of our commitment to combating beach erosion, our Tree Nursery cultivated several essential species:
Barringtonia asiatica, Sea Poison Tree |
Known for its historical use in sustainable fishing; its seeds contain natural saponins used to stun fish without affecting the meat.
Terminalia catappa, Indian Almond Tree |
A hardy coastal staple featuring edible kernels with a flavor similar to traditional almonds.
Scaevola taccada, Sea Cabbage |
Recognisable by its waxy, spiral-patterned leaves that resemble heads of lettuce, designed to retain moisture.
Rhizophora mucronata, Red Mangrove |
Distinguished by its arching prop roots that reveal a vibrant reddish-brown interior.
Rhizophora apiculata, Tall-stilt Mangrove |
A structural marvel with "stilted" roots extending up to 5 meters, providing unmatched stability against the tide.
By prioritizing native flora, we are investing in the long-term stability and health of the island.

Empowering communities through sustainable innovation.
Traditional recycling isn't always an option for glass—it requires upcycling to truly find a second life.
At TIC, we are actively developing sustainable solutions for glass waste management across our coastal and island communities.
Through our Rumah Eko initiative, we recently hosted a Glass Upcycling Workshop for the local Mersing community. This capacity-building program empowers residents with tangible skills to build alternative, sustainable livelihoods while protecting our marine environment.
Together, we are identifying potential commercial products made from upcycled glass.
This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact,” reminds us that global sustainability vision relies on dedicated local implementation.
We invite organizations and individuals to collaborate with us. Contact us today to become a partner.

Advancing turtle database for Johor.
Projek Penyelidikan Penyu Karah Berasaskan Genetik dan Penjejakan Satelit —specialized workshop focused on Hawksbill Sea Turtle genetics and satellite tracking at Pejabat Perikanan Daerah Mersing.
Organised by Department of Fisheries, DOF and Universiti Malaysia Sabah, UMS lead by Dr Juanita Joseph in collaboration with Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) and TIC | Tengah Island Conservation — the two-day session provided practical training in satellite tagging and tissue sampling.
These tools are crucial for tracking migration patterns and combating rising threats like marine traffic and ghost nets in Johor waters.
The initiative also supports the creation of ShellBank, a vital genetic database for population tracking.
Let’s protect our marine heritage together.
Stay tuned.
Join us this June for a series of turtle awareness activities in celebration of World Sea Turtle Day.
