🧐 How much load can a friction pile really carry?
A recent Bi-Directional Pile Load Test was carried out for a project in Central Jakarta, providing valuable insight into the performance of a deep friction pile within the local soil profile.
Project Overview
• Pile Diameter: 1200 mm
• Pile Length: 44.650 m
• Test Load: 5500 kN
• Pile Type: Friction Pile
In dense urban environments like Jakarta, deep piles often rely heavily on shaft resistance rather than end bearing. Understanding how load is transferred along the pile shaft is essential for verifying the design assumptions.
By using the Bi-Directional Pile Load Test, engineers can apply the load internally within the pile. This method allows the shaft resistance and base response to be evaluated separately, providing a clearer picture of how the pile behaves under load.
It also allows higher test loads to be achieved without the need for massive external reaction systems — a significant advantage for deep foundation testing in restricted construction sites.
Every soil profile tells a different story, and field testing remains one of the most reliable ways to confirm how a pile truly performs.
Would a conventional static load test have been practical for this pile?
