Words have the power to calm and inspire, to oppress or liberate, to heal or to destroy. Take for example some of the most powerful speeches, like Martin Luther King's 'I Have A Dream' or Nelson Mandela's 'I Am Prepared To Die'. Words can influence the perspective of millions, and as we've seen with less favourable examples throughout history, it can also shift the wrong way.

In recent years, hate speech continues to be on the rise, inciting violence and bigotry. In an effort to fight this, for the first time ever, the United Nations is declaring today, the International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

In the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “Hatred is a danger to everyone – and so fighting it must be a job for everyone”. Words have the power to change the world, so today we claim and urge everyone to work together, to combat the global phenomenon of hate speech.
