More people could die from protein shakes, coroner warns 19/09/2023

[For those who have pre-existing medical conditions, take note]

A coroner has issued a warning regarding the potential dangers of protein shakes after a teenager died due to irreversible brain damage caused by undiagnosed ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, a rare urea cycle disorder that prevents the breakdown of ammonia.

The coroner has urged for clear warning labels on protein products and a review of the classification of 16 to 18-year-olds for healthcare, as confusion over pediatric or adult care may lead to inadequate treatment.

He also highlighted the lack of guidance for testing ammonia levels in emergency departments. ........................................................................................................................................
Takeaways: PLEASE consult your professional medical advisor, IF you have a pre-existing medical condition, BEFORE consuming any supplements.

Stay safe and cheers.

More people could die from protein shakes, coroner warns Rohan Godhania, 16, from Ealing, west London, became unwell having consumed the drink and died after advice from neurologists suggesting he be tested for ammonia were ignored.

Is Protein Powder Bad For You? | Acne, Hair Loss and Kidney Damage 16/09/2023

In our recent post, where we delved into the potential side effects of consuming too much protein powder, this video clearly debunked the three most common concerns of a high protein diet: kidney damage, hair loss, and acne outbreaks.
1. Kidney Health:
Our kidneys are like filters in our body, cleaning our blood by removing waste and extra water. We measure how well they work using something called the Filtration Rate. When you have a lot of protein, like from drinking protein shakes, your kidneys get busier and work faster, but only for a short time. If someone already has kidney problems, this extra work might make things worse in the long run. But for healthy people, our kidneys are like superheroes – they can handle the extra work without any issues. In fact, a study in 2018 showed that eating lots of protein doesn't harm the kidneys of healthy adults.
2. Hair Loss:
In guys, losing hair happens because of things like genes and a hormone called testosterone. When testosterone changes into another thing called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it can make hair follicles (the things that grow hair) smaller. This is more likely to happen in guys who have a family history of hair loss. Now, some people worry that eating too much protein might increase testosterone, which could mean more hair loss. But after looking at a few small studies, it seems that protein doesn't actually mess with testosterone levels. So, for now, we don't have strong proof that eating protein causes hair loss.
3. Acne:
Acne is when your skin gets those annoying pimples. It's super common, and a bunch of things can cause it, like your genes and hormones. One hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF) can make acne worse. Some people think that drinking milk or whey protein (from milk) might make IGF go up and make acne worse. There have been a few cases where people said their acne got worse after using whey protein. But we're not totally sure about this because the evidence isn't super strong. If you have really bad acne, you might want to try protein sources that aren't from dairy, like soy or plant-based protein.
