A short story based on the African proverb "until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter"

In a vast savanna, there lived a wise old lion named Kofi. Kofi had seen many seasons pass, and with each one, he observed how the stories of the land were told by the humans the hunters. These tales always celebrated the bravery and skill of the hunters, while the animals, especially the lions, were depicted as mere challenges to be conquered.

Kofi often gathered the younger lions and shared his thoughts. "Why is it," he pondered, "that our side of the story is never told? We are noble and strong, yet our tales are twisted into legends of fear and defeat."

One day, a young lioness named Amani, inspired by Kofi's words, decided to change this narrative. She began observing the humans closely, learning their language and the way they chronicled their adventures. She practiced scratching symbols into the dirt, mimicking the hunters’ writing.

Over time, Amani mastered the skill of writing. She started documenting the life of the lions—their struggles, their triumphs, and their perspectives. Her stories spoke of the lions' courage, the bonds of their pride, and their role in maintaining the balance of the savanna.

When Amani's writings were shared among the animals, they felt a newfound sense of pride. Soon, the tales spread beyond the savanna, reaching human villages. The people were astonished to see the world through the eyes of the lions. They began to appreciate the animals not just as adversaries but as integral beings of the ecosystem.

Through Amani's efforts, the lions' voices were finally heard. The proverb "until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter" was no longer just a cautionary saying but a call to action that had reshaped the way stories were told in the savanna.
