"The Man Who Sweeps at 4 A.M."
Every day before the city wakes up, there’s a man who sweeps the street in front of our compound. He wears a faded reflective jacket and rubber boots that have clearly seen better days.
One morning, I couldn’t sleep, so I stepped outside around 4 a.m. There he was—sweeping quietly under the flicker of a faulty streetlight, his broom making that soft shraa-shraa sound against the concrete.
I asked him, “Oga, why you dey sweep this early?”
He looked up, smiled faintly, and said, “Because people deserve to wake up to something clean.”
I nodded slowly. “Even when dem no go thank you?”
He chuckled. “Na work wey no get applause dey build character.”
That hit me.
While many sleep and dream of better lives, this man is already building his—one sweep, one quiet act of service at a time.
He may not be on Instagram. He doesn’t post motivational quotes. But every morning, without fail, he shows up.
And sometimes, showing up quietly is the loudest form of greatness.

The Boy Who Sells Egg Roll
Every morning on my way to work, I pass a boy—maybe 13 years old—who sells egg rolls in traffic at Berger. He doesn’t shout like the others. He doesn’t chase cars or knock on windows. He just walks quietly, balancing his tray, eyes focused, like someone with a plan.
One morning, I noticed he had only one egg roll left. I called him over to buy it. As I handed him ₦500, he hesitated.
“Oga, I no get change,” he said.
I told him to keep the change. He shook his head.
“I go wait.”
I watched as he stood there in the heat, tray nearly empty, waiting patiently as cars zoomed past. Ten minutes later, another driver gave him ₦200 for an egg roll. The boy jogged back to my side and stretched out ₦300.
I was shocked. “You still came back?”
He nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. “Na my mama dey calculate everything. I no fit cheat.”
I looked at him—this skinny boy in dusty slippers, who probably hasn’t had breakfast—refusing to take what he didn’t earn.
So many times, we rush past kids like him in traffic. We complain when they tap our side mirrors. But behind that cracked tray is often a story of quiet strength, dignity, and a kind of honesty the world no longer expects.
Since that day, I buy egg rolls with both my money—and my respect."
