News Update: Aircraft Crashes at Owerri Airport Carrying Four Persons

A Cessna 172 aircraft with registration number 5N-ASR, operated by Skypower Express, crashed at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State on Tuesday evening, December 16.

The aircraft had four passengers and crew members on board. It had taken off from Kaduna International Airport on its way to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an emergency and diverted to Owerri.

Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), confirmed the incident. The NSIB reported that the aircraft crashed in the approach area of Runway 17, but there have been no recorded fatalities.

ASP Mohammed Adeola, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force at the Airport Command in Lagos, also confirmed the crash. He stated that the aircraft sustained various degrees of damage. All four crew members on board were successfully rescued. Two crew members are in stable condition. The other two, who were initially unconscious, were taken to the hospital for medical care.
