From Silence to Leadership: Blessing’s Journey of Transformation

At 24 years old, Blessing had learned to make herself invisible.

In the crowded streets of Kaduna, she moved through life carrying burdens that few people could see. Growing up in a low-income household, opportunities had always seemed to belong to other people people with connections, confidence, and voices that mattered. For years, she struggled with self-doubt, limited access to accurate health information, and a deep sense of exclusion from decisions affecting her life and future.

“I never thought people like me could speak where decisions were being made,” she recalls. “I thought leadership was for important people, not for girls like me.”

Before joining Open Heart’s Y+ Global Gender Equality Fund (GEF) project, Blessing had little knowledge of her sexual and reproductive health rights. Like many young women in her community, much of what she knew came from rumors, myths, and fragmented conversations. Visiting health facilities often felt intimidating, and she rarely felt comfortable asking questions or expressing her concerns. More importantly, she lacked confidence in her own voice.

That began to change when she participated in Open Heart’s AGYW leadership and empowerment activities.

Through health education sessions, mentorship opportunities, advocacy trainings, and peer learning platforms, Blessing encountered something she had never experienced before: a space where her opinions mattered.

For the first time, she learned about bodily autonomy, informed decision-making, HIV prevention, reproductive health, and the importance of meaningful youth participation. But beyond the knowledge she gained, something deeper was happening.

Slowly, the quiet young woman who once sat at the back of every room began to speak.

Then she began to ask questions.

Then she began to lead.

Supported by mentors and fellow participants, Blessing emerged as one of the most active young women within the programme. She participated in advocacy engagements, contributed to discussions on youth-friendly health services, and helped mobilize other young women to seek accurate health information and access available services.

One of her proudest moments came when she represented her peers during a stakeholder engagement where young women were invited to share their perspectives on barriers affecting healthcare access. Standing before health officials and community stakeholders, Blessing spoke openly about confidentiality concerns, provider attitudes, and the need for more responsive youth-friendly services.

“I was shaking when I stood up,” she remembers. “But I realized that if I didn’t speak, many girls who felt like me would remain unheard.”

Today, Blessing is no longer the young woman who believed her voice carried no weight.

She now serves as a peer advocate within her community, providing health information to other young women and encouraging them to participate in decisions affecting their health and wellbeing. Friends and community members increasingly seek her advice, and she has become a trusted source of support among her peers.

The transformation has extended beyond health knowledge. Blessing reports increased confidence, stronger communication skills, greater self-worth, and a renewed belief in her ability to influence change.

“Before this project, I was waiting for someone to save me,” she says. “Now I know that I can be part of changing my community.”

Blessing’s story reflects the broader impact of Open Heart’s Y+ Global Gender Equality Fund project. When young women are equipped with knowledge, supported through mentorship, and given meaningful opportunities to participate, they do more than access services they become leaders, advocates, and catalysts for change.

For Blessing, the journey began with information. It evolved into confidence. Today, it continues as leadership.

And perhaps most importantly, she now knows something she once doubted:

Her voice matters.
