“Radiant self “

Radiant Self celebrates the confidence, joy, and authenticity that emerge when one embraces their identity. Through the warm smile of a young child, the work captures a moment of genuine self-expression, inviting viewers to reflect on the beauty of individuality and the power of self-acceptance.

The bright background creates an atmosphere of optimism and vitality, while the blue beads woven into the braids serve as symbols of culture, memory, and personal history. Together, these elements emphasize that identity is not only inherited but also expressed through everyday acts of presence, confidence, and connection.

The child’s direct gaze establishes a relationship between the subject and the viewer, transforming the portrait into a celebration of visibility and belonging. Rather than focusing solely on likeness, the work highlights the emotional qualities that shape our sense of self: joy, resilience, curiosity, and hope.

As part of the Braids of Identity series, Radiant Self continues my exploration of Black hair as a vessel of cultural memory and personal expression. Through portraiture, I seek to honor the stories, traditions, and experiences woven into these hairstyles while celebrating the confidence that grows from knowing and embracing who we are.

Braids of identity: Silent lines
Silent Lines reflects on the understated beauty of braided patterns and the narratives they hold. The subject’s downward gaze creates a moment of introspection, directing attention toward the carefully constructed lines that travel across the scalp. These braids become visual pathways connecting memory, ancestry, and personal experience. By emphasizing structure, rhythm, and craftsmanship, the work encourages viewers to consider how cultural identity is often communicated through details that speak quietly yet carry profound meaning.

Braids of identity: Nexus
Nexus examines identity as a constructed point of convergence, where personal, cultural, and aesthetic forces meet and are held in deliberate balance. The composition centers on a controlled structure of braided forms that radiate outward, emphasizing order, precision, and intentional design.

The braided hair operates as an architectural system rather than ornament, each section contributing to a larger network of connections. These interwoven strands suggest that identity is not singular or fixed, but formed through the interaction of multiple influences. The circular gold element at the core functions as a visual anchor, marking a site of alignment where these forces converge and stabilize.

The symmetry of the composition introduces a sense of discipline and containment, while subtle variations in form and texture resist complete uniformity. This tension reflects the negotiation between individuality and structure, where identity exists within a framework yet continues to assert its complexity.

By focusing on the back of the head, the work removes direct facial identity and instead foregrounds construction, process, and form. Nexus presents identity not as something immediately visible, but as something built, organized, and continuously shaped through connection.

Braids of identity: Continuity
Continuity examines identity as a sustained process shaped through repetition, preservation, and the transmission of cultural practices across generations. Rather than focusing on origin or transformation, this work emphasizes the ongoing nature of identity as something carried forward over time.

The hairstyle reflects this idea through its structure and flow. The tightly patterned cornrows at the scalp extend seamlessly into fuller twists, creating a visual continuity between foundation and extension. This progression suggests that identity is not fragmented but built through consistent cultural practices that evolve without losing their roots.

The presence of adornment within the hairstyle introduces a layer of cultural expression that exists within tradition rather than outside it. These elements do not disrupt the structure but enhance it, reflecting how identity can be maintained while still allowing for variation and personal presence.

The subject’s profile reinforces a sense of forward movement, suggesting continuity through time. The figure does not confront the viewer but exists within an ongoing journey, where identity is neither static nor abruptly transformed, but steadily sustained.

Through this work, hairstyling is positioned as a living cultural practice that connects past and present. Continuity presents identity as something preserved through repetition and care, where each act of styling becomes part of a larger, ongoing narrative.
