THE QUIET GENERAL: Life and Death of Muhammadu Buhari

Muhammadu Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in the dusty town of Daura, in what was then the Northern Region of British Nigeria. The 23rd child of his father, Buhari’s early years were shaped by Islamic education, discipline, and the spartan lifestyle of a Fulani family. His destiny, however, was far from ordinary.

At the age of 19, Buhari joined the Nigerian Military Training College, beginning a journey that would etch his name into Nigeria’s complex political history. Trained in Britain and India, he quickly rose through the military ranks, noted for his calm demeanor, strictness, and unyielding stance on discipline and integrity.

In 1983, amid mounting economic collapse and corruption scandals, Buhari staged a coup, overthrowing the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari. At just 41 years old, he became Nigeria’s military Head of State. His regime was defined by the “War Against Indiscipline”—a campaign that saw Nigerians lined up for buses in neat queues, civil servants held accountable, and corrupt officials jailed.

But his iron grip didn’t last. In August 1985, General Ibrahim Babangida ousted Buhari in a bloodless coup, placing him under house arrest for over three years. Many thought that would be the last Nigeria would hear of him.

They were wrong.

Decades later, in 2015, after three failed presidential bids, Buhari staged a political comeback—this time through the ballot box. Riding on a wave of frustration with then-president Goodluck Jonathan, Buhari was elected as Nigeria’s president at age 72, becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president
