In many parts of the world, old fishing nets, one of the most harmful types of marine plastic pollution, are being given a second life. Reshaped into smart floating barriers, these nets now collect floating debris while allowing fish and marine life to swim safely underneath. This simple yet brilliant innovation reduces ocean plastic without disrupting ecosystems.
Africa has a similar opportunity and an urgent need.
Africa generates millions of tonnes of plastic waste annually, much of which ends up in rivers, lagoons, and coastal waters. In cities like the Niger Delta Region (Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers), Epe and Ibeju-Lekki (Lagos State), Accra, Douala, and Dar es Salaam, discarded fishing nets & plastic debris contribute to clogged waterways, worsened flooding, and damaged marine ecosystems that support the livelihoods of millions of fishermen & coastal communities.
At African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation (ASCIF), we are championing circular solutions that turn waste problems into local opportunities:
๐ข Repurposing plastic waste into useful construction materials and products
๐ข Integrating smart waste management with our zero-waste and climate-resilient urban programmes
Just like the innovative floating barriers, we believe Africa can lead in creative reuse. Old fishing nets, plastic bottles, and other waste can become tools for cleaner rivers, healthier coasts, and stronger blue economies.
As we continue to mark the spirit of the ASCIF calls for greater investment in circular economy innovations, smart collection systems, & community-driven solutions across African cities.
Real change happens when we stop seeing waste as trash & start seeing it as a resource.
Letโs build cleaner, more resilient African cities; one smart reuse at a time.
